In France, tolls are payable for all vehicles. The amount of the toll depends on the class of the vehicle and the distance traveled. The payment system is through the entrances and exits of the paid sections, where the payment can be made by bank card, cash, or automated through an on-board device.

Classification of vehicles

For the purposes of determining the number of tolls in France, vehicles are divided into 5 classes depending on height, gross weight, and number of axles. 

Class 1

Light Vehicles

  • Vehicles with a height of up to 2 meters and a total weight of up to 3.5 tons;
  • In the case of a combination of vehicles – a height of up to 2 meters and a weight of up to 3.5 tons of the towing vehicle.



 

 

 

Class 2

Intermediate Vehicles

  • Vehicles with a height of 2 to < 3 meters and a total weight of less than 3.5 tonnes;
  • In the case of a combination of vehicles – height from 2 to < 3 meters and total weight of the towing vehicle below 3.5 tons.

  • A combination of vehicles ≥ 3 meters high;

vTOLL International is a solution for electronic toll collection based on the distance traveled on the TOLL road sections in 11 European countries – Austria, Belgium [Viapass, Liefkenshoek Tunnel], Germany, [ LKW-Maut, Herrentunnel ], Storebaelt in Denmark, Spanish, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Hungary, France and Oresund Bridge between Sweden and Denmark.  The service includes all activities related to registering the toll sections through which the vehicles pass and payment of the due Toll fees through the partner of Vem Technology for the service, company AXXÈS. The class of the road determines the Toll, the distance traveled, the category, the emission class and the number of axles of the vehicle.

The service is provided by means of a user-friendly  B’Moov on-board unit (OBU), which is installed and used in the driver’s cab of the vehicle.
